All You Can't Eat

While the federal government is going about the business of poisoning my house pets, I thought I'd go ahead and give my own kidneys the business on Saturday night. Please enjoy this Slate.com article about my recent trip to the All You Can Eat Pavillion at Dodger Stadium.

For those of you who want to watch videos of me talking about being a dad with another author who wants to be a comedian, go here. Thanks to the fine guys at Dad Labs for their interest.

Finally, I will call your attention to a new kids' music compilation from DeSoto Records. It's called PLAY, and it's been in heavy car rotation lately. Elijah loves every single cut, except for the Mudhoney one. A must-have for indie-music-loving parents (or just general music-loving parents everywhere.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go prepare myself for the inevitable vitriol from the Dodgers' PR office.

Neal —

Very entertaining story about gorging yourself at Dodgers Stadium and converting AM/PM into your own personal vomitorium.

One thing though: Jackie Robinson played first base in his rookie year.

How did you get this plum assignment by the way? I'd love to write about my successful string of sneaking beer into AT&T Park in my socks and down my pants.

JE

Thanks, Joe! I have alerted the troops and the Robinson fact will be corrected very quickly.

As for how I got the assignment, let's just call it my reward for 15 years in the freelance trenches...

FYI, I don't think excresence means what you think it means.

I saw that DeSoto compilation mentioned on Pitchfork, but I can't find the damn thing anywhere on iTunes. Anybody have a link?

Sweth:

That is controversial. I interpret the word as "something that can come out of your body...it doesn't necessarily have to be a growth, right?

Tim:

The album doesn't officially release for a month. They have sample MP3s somewhere on the DeSoto site...

Their own site (that you linked) says:

"The music is out April 17, via mailorder and iTunes"

And Pitchform mentioned April 14th:

Lying bastards.

Aw, hell. I don't know when it's coming out...

It's probably just a few days late or something. I blame Steve Jobs.

The Play comp will have a bonus Travis Morrison track on iTunes whenever it's finally uploaded. Which is supposed to be yesterday, but it takes iTunes forever to load most CDs.

And Neal's right, it's a pretty awesome CD -- it shouldn't just be pegged for indie-loving parents.

Worth the wait for May.

That is controversial. I interpret the word as "something that can come out of your body...it doesn't necessarily have to be a growth, right?

No controversy according to the OED. It's a growth, not excretion, which is the word you probably wanted.

Speaking of excretion, I thought cannabis was supposed to suppress nausea. Wha' happened?

As PhillyD says, I think you're confusing "excretion" with "excrescence". The latter comes from "excrescere", meaning "to grow out" in Latin, and is a growth; the former comes from "excernere", meaning "to separate out" in Latin, and is any sort of waste product.

(More importantly, though, the Rabbi is far from the first to eat a Nacho Dog; for one thing, the hot dog vendors here in DC often offer nacho-esque toppings like canned cheese product, canned chili, and canned jalapenos.)

I liked the use of the phrase "intoxicating myself."

Was that a compromise with the Washington Post standards people?

The "Play" cd is currently available through eMusic. Dang people, don't fall into the DRM trap!

hey neal. i did the illustration for the slate.com article. i had a great time...lots of lovely visual cues to work from. of course now i can't close my eyes without seeing nacho cheese.

Sorry about that, eben. And no, "intoxicating myself" was a euphemism that I threw in there in case the Dodgers management was in a combative mood.

Thanks for the heads up on eMusic Funklord. I thought maybe it was only available on iTunes. I do like to avoid the DRM where possible.

I did the free trial with eMusic a while back, but the selection was weak and I don't like the monthly subscription model. Maybe I'll go back for the free trial and check it out again.

wait a minute, your kid doesn't like "I LIKE TO MAKE NOISE AND BREAK THINGS!"?? too funny. my boys love it, but their favorite is "Truck On Truck". OH YEAH!

if you are in DC we've got the CD release show for PLAY on sunday! www.rocknromp.com for details!

"...who wants to be a comedian"
Shouldn't that read, "...a comedian who wants to be an author?"
