The Morning After
I took Elijah to school this morning. We got there a little late, so all his friends were already running around the schoolyard. His buddy Sean, the Dodger fan, was there, wearing his Number 5 T-shirt.
"What happened last night, Sean?" I asked.
"Nomar hit a home run," he said.
Sean's mother was hanging over the balcony.
"Did you see it?" she said.
"Of course I saw it."
"Greg woke me up this morning, gave me a cup of tea, and said, 'watch this.' I cried for 20 minutes."
The kids were still bustling all around me at that point, so I threw my hat up in the air and started jumping. They all bounced off me, at least five of them, even though only Sean had any idea what I was doing. He raised a hand for me to slap. I picked him up and kept jumping.
"Me, daddy, me," Elijah said.
So I picked Elijah up as well.
"WHOOOOO!" I shouted, though I don't have much of a voice today.
"The Dodgers hit 20 home runs and 40 home runs," Elijah said, "and they went into the parking lot and then into the ocean, and they won."
"Close enough," I said.
I threw myself on the concrete, pumping my fist all the way, and the kids piled on.

Arrrggghh! I don't want to hear it! Fucking Padres! I can't believe they picked up rag-arm Rudy Seanez after the BoSox cut him so he can groove waist-high fastballs down the middle to Nomar with the biggest game of the season on the line. And what was Nomar doing in the game, anyway? It's September -- he's should have had his annual season-ending injury months ago.
And what the hell was Jughead Bochy doing putting Seanez in there anyway, with a one-run lead? That game was everything. I know all the Pads' "good" relievers had already been used (with piss-poor results - the only games Trevor Hoffman can't save are the big ones) but a smart manager would warm up one of his stud starting pitchers who's in between starts (hello, Woody Williams, Chris Young) and send him out to close that mother rather than some retread with an ERA bigger than his dick.
Of course, if the Pads can extract head from ass long enough to finish strong, this horrible game could be a minor footnote on the path to glory. But after choking away the division like they did last night, what are the chances of that?

I still get good feelings remembering Ausmus' homer last year with 2 outs in the ninth to pull the Astros even against the Braves, and Burke's in the 18th. even if the end to that particular story was disappointing. have to admit i'll get some satisfaction if the white sox miss the playoffs this year.

I just had to check in, see how you responded to that game, Neal. The one place Elijah left out --after the Blue went to the parking lot and the ocean -- was "over the moon". I didn't see the shots, but hearing Charlie Steiner's calls replayed on the radio next morning was more than enough to get me hooked. They better make it into the playoffs... I'm hooked now (plus the White Sox are sunk, so I guess I was *needing* a new team to care about for the next month anyway.)
