Dodgers 11, Padres 10
Perhaps you don't want to picture me writhing and shrieking on my sofa, alone, at 11 PM on a Monday night. Perhaps you're not interesting in the image of me tearing the T-shirt off my chest. And you definitely don't want to hear about me dropping to my knees and weeping. But when your baseball team hits four consecutive home runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the game (a feat that has only happened four times in baseball history, and not since 1963, and never in such dramatic context), and then wins with a two-run homer in the bottom of the tenth to win a game that puts them into first place with fewer than two weeks to go into the season, well, that's what happens.
I just witnessed the second-greatest moment in Dodgers history. And that may have been the greatest single baseball game of all time. It was certainly the greatest comeback of all time. I still can't believe it. I just can't. That game is NEVER coming off the TIVO.
If anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about, look it up.
Oh man.

Comments
I don't think I've ever seen 4 homers hit like that. I'm glad I didn't watch last week's Survivor on Tivo like I originally planned.

Well, there's the Kirk Gibson homer--one of the all-time greatest moments in sports. But as impressive as tonight's game was, surely there must be at least one other Dodgers moment that outweighs this? Not that I can think of it offhand (unless you count their roles in ignominy, which would bring Bobby Thomson's "Shot" into play)... well, what about 1965 World Series against (my) Twins? Koufax not only skipped Yom Kippur game, but pitched Game 5 and Game 7 shut-outs--that Game 7 must surely count strongly against tonight's performance.

Four home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. To tie the game. Enough said.

I know, I know: four homers. In a key pennant-race game. Amazing shit. Still, twenty-four pitchers have given up four home runs in an inning before (granted: none in the 9th inning)--and none of those games ranks with the one in which Gibson hit his homer or Koufax's pair of shut-outs in the World Series (where a loss would have cost them the championship). Nor will, for that matter, this game amount to squat when the Dodgers have to face Santana, Nathan, et.al., in the World Series (if either team makes it that far).
Meantime, hope you're inculcating deep appreciation for meaningless, but passionate, debates about sports in Elijah. About the best I've come to with my 2-year-old daughter Maia is having her scream, "Owee--bandaid!" whenever she sees someone get tackled during an NFL game. At least, utterly unlike my wife, she enjoys the stinky basement couch and the pretzels.

Here in the Central time zone I turned in early, so I didn't see this result until just now. Thought of you immediately, and your shirt-tearing/weeping reaction is just about what I expected - although I had imagined your doing it in the stands at Chavez Ravine.
Not that I have a dog in the NL West hunt, but who wants the Padres? I mean, really? Go Dodgers!

That game was awesome! I'm a Cards fan, and I want to see a Cards-Dodgers playoff.

If you get a chance read Eric Neel's piece on ESPN, I think you will enjoy it.
